Iran Pushes to Fast-Track 7-Day Plan With US Through Mediators
In a post on US social media platform X, Araghchi said Tehran is keeping the door open to diplomacy even as relations with the United States remain strained.
“While our Brave Armed Forces are fully prepared to defend the Homeland, Iran continues to give diplomacy a chance to succeed,” he said. “We remain in close and ongoing contact with intermediaries to review ideas that can ensure implementation of our 7-Day Plan in even less than a week.”
Tehran passed the plan to Washington through Qatari mediators in September. It sets out a path to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume US talks within a week, on the condition that Washington meets Iran’s demands.
The first five days would be the US’s responsibility. Under the proposal, Washington would halt hostilities, lift its naval blockade of Iranian ports, ease restrictions on Iranian oil exports and release frozen Iranian assets.
Iran would respond on day six by restoring normal commercial traffic through the strait. Negotiations on a comprehensive agreement would then resume on day seven. All of the measures remain subject to agreement.
Araghchi said on Oct. 8 that Tehran was reviewing Washington’s reply to the proposal, with messages still passing between the two sides via intermediaries.
His latest remarks come as diplomats scramble to preserve a fragile ceasefire between Iran and the US, which followed months of military confrontation.
The two countries signed the Islamabad Memorandum on June 18 after talks brokered by Pakistan and Oman. The agreement addressed several flashpoints, including maritime security in the strait, sanctions relief and the withdrawal of US naval restrictions.
Oman, Pakistan and Qatar continue their diplomatic outreach to narrow the gaps between Tehran and Washington.
