Turkey Signals Support for Hormuz Mine-Clearing if Requested

(MENAFN) Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has said that Türkiye would be prepared to take part in potential mine-clearing operations in the Strait of Hormuz if formally requested by the parties involved.

Speaking in an interview with South Korean broadcaster during his visit to South Korea, Fidan stated that such cooperation would depend on agreement between relevant sides and an official request for assistance.

“If an agreement is reached between the parties, or if we are asked to contribute to the mine-clearing process, we would be pleased to do so,” he said.

Fidan explained that Türkiye follows a consistent approach to conflict resolution, including in other international crises such as the Russia-Ukraine war, emphasizing support for diplomatic solutions when conditions allow.

“When the warring parties agree on a solution, and when we believe we can be part of that solution or are asked to facilitate it, we are ready to help,” he added.

He also expressed cautious optimism regarding efforts to de-escalate tensions, noting that both the United States and Iran appear to have an interest in reducing hostilities.

The comments come amid ongoing regional tensions affecting maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy transit route that has faced heightened risks in recent months, according to reports.
