Trump, Netanyahu Agree on Stronger Economic Measures Against Iran

(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have reportedly agreed to increase economic pressure on Iran, focusing specifically on curbing its oil exports to China, according to reports.

The agreement was reached during a Wednesday meeting at the White House, according to sources familiar with the discussions. A senior U.S. official said, "We agreed that we will go full force with maximum pressure against Iran, for example, regarding Iranian oil sales to China."

However, the two leaders expressed differing views on how to achieve this objective.

Netanyahu argued that a reliable agreement with Iran is unlikely and would probably be broken, while Trump expressed optimism that a deal could be reached, stating, “We’ll see if it’s possible -- let’s give it a shot.”

American officials indicated that the U.S. intends to continue its maximum pressure campaign on Iran in tandem with nuclear negotiations and a strengthened military presence in the Middle East, keeping the option of strikes open should diplomatic efforts fail.

With more than 80% of Iran’s oil exports going to China, any reduction in purchases from Beijing could significantly increase economic pressure on Tehran, potentially encouraging greater concessions on its nuclear program.

Additionally, a recently signed executive order by Trump provides the U.S. with tools to intensify economic pressure, including authorizing the heads of the Treasury and Commerce departments to recommend tariffs of up to 25% on countries that maintain trade relations with Iran.
