Germany Seeks to Boost Economic, Energy Partnerships with Central Asia

(MENAFN) Germany plans to significantly expand economic and energy cooperation with Central Asian countries, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said Wednesday.

Speaking in Berlin after meetings with his Central Asian counterparts, Wadephul stressed that Europe must build new partnerships in response to changing geopolitical dynamics.

“We want to further expand economic cooperation with Central Asia for mutual benefit,” he told reporters. “We Europeans want and need to diversify our economic relationships. This applies in particular to the procurement of critical raw materials and rare earth elements.”

The minister noted that Germany’s strategic partnerships with Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan have lasted more than two decades, and Berlin is committed to deepening these ties to strengthen links between Europe and Central Asia.

“Central Asia lies at a geopolitical crossroads and must contend with existing and growing Chinese interests and the threat posed by Russia,” Wadephul said, warning that Moscow’s ambitions endanger international security and its neighbors. “As Europeans, we are committed to defending the rules-based international order worldwide. We share this goal with the Central Asian states,” he added.

The ministers also discussed the Russia-Ukraine war and EU sanctions on Russia. Wadephul urged his Central Asian counterparts to help prevent sanctions evasion and collaborate with the EU, emphasizing that any attempts to circumvent the measures would aid Russia’s war efforts and pose a direct threat to European security.
