Iran, Russia Ink Deal for Four Nuclear Power Plants

(MENAFN) Iran has finalized a $25 billion contract with Russia’s state-owned energy company Rosatom to build four nuclear power facilities, according to a news agency on Friday.

The pact was officially signed on Wednesday during the Atom Expo 2025 event held in Moscow. Rosatom characterized the initiative as a “strategic” project.

This development occurs as the so-called “snapback” mechanism from the landmark 2025 nuclear agreement with Iran is being activated by European nations, with the measure expected to take effect by the end of Saturday.

Britain, France, and Germany triggered these sanctions last month, accusing Iran of violating its obligations under the deal.

Meanwhile, Russia and China have voiced their opposition to the imposed sanctions.

Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations has declared that Moscow does not acknowledge the legality of the snapback process.

The news agency’s report detailed that the Generation III nuclear reactors will be constructed on a 500-hectare plot located in the Sirik area of southeastern Hormozgan province.

These plants are projected to generate 5,000 megawatts of power.

The agreement was signed by Rosatom’s director Alexei Likhachev and Mohammad Eslami, head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization.

Officials emphasized that the contract demonstrates the two nations’ dedication to “peaceful nuclear cooperation.”
