Drone Attack Hits Khor Mor Gas Field in Iraq
The strike hit the northern gas field at 11:30 p.m. local time (2030GMT), according to a joint announcement from the Ministries of Natural Resources and Electricity of the Kurdish Regional Government.
The statement added that the attack resulted in a total shutdown of gas supplies flowing to electricity generation facilities.
Social media footage captured towering flames erupting from the sprawling facility following the nighttime assault.
As of Thursday morning, no organization had stepped forward to claim responsibility for the operation.
The Khor Mor field serves as a vital artery for electricity generation across the region, making its disruption a significant blow to energy security. The facility's output is essential for maintaining power supplies to communities throughout the area.
Authorities have not yet released information about potential casualties, the extent of infrastructure damage, or estimated timelines for restoring gas flows to affected power generation facilities.
The attack underscores ongoing security vulnerabilities facing critical energy infrastructure in Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdish region, where such installations remain attractive targets despite enhanced protective measures.
