Gas Pipeline Incident Leaves Two Dead, 6 Injured in Egypt

(MENAFN) Two fatalities and six injuries resulted from a gas pipeline incident Sunday during standard maintenance operations in Egypt's Ismailia Governorate, located east of Cairo, according to the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources.

Emergency response teams deployed to Abu Sultan area following reports of a "loud noise" at 6:40 p.m. local time (1540 GMT), ministry officials confirmed in their statement.

The accident struck while maintenance crews prepared the pipeline system for scheduled work, with authorities noting the affected pipeline segment contained no natural gas during the incident. Subsequent technical analysis revealed a "sending trap" had separated from the pipeline at a welded connection point.

Ministry representatives emphasized Egypt's gas supply remained unaffected since the damaged pipeline was already offline for maintenance purposes.

Officials have initiated a comprehensive investigation to establish precise accident causation factors, the ministry announced.
